Journalists attacked for unmasking vote riggings: BNP mayoral candidates

The journalists were attacked on the election day of Dhaka’s two city corporations as they were unmasking vote riggings, alleged Bangladesh Nationalist Party mayoral candidates on Tuesday.

The opposition party candidates Ishraque Hossain and Tabith Awal, after visiting injured journalist Mostafizur Rahman Sumon at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, also alleged that the city polls’ results were changed through media trickery.

Mostafizur was seriously injured in an attack allegedly by supporters of Sheikh Mohammad Hossain Khokon, ruling Awami League-backed councilor candidate for Ward 34 of Dhaka north city.

‘On the election day, the journalists were attacked as they were unmasking vote riggings. It is now clear to the nation,’ said BNP’s Dhaka south city mayoral candidate Ishraque.

‘Despite vote riggings throughout the day, when we were ahead in the result, media trickery was committed at about 7:00pm and the election result of mayoral posts were announced at about 1:00am and at about 4:00am on Sunday,’ he said.

He alleged that the polls results were published after manipulation.

Dhaka north city BNP mayoral candidate Tabith said that it was now clear who committed the attack and why.

He said that there might be difference of opinion over the total electoral system but it was the responsibility of the state to ensure safety and security which the election commission as well as the law enforcement agencies utterly failed to prove.
