AL-backed panel bags 10 posts in bar council poll

Ruling Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannoy Parishad panel bagged 10 posts out of 14, in the election to the Bangladesh Bar Council, the lawyers’ regulatory body in the country.
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad secured four posts.
Bangladesh bar council’s ex-officio chairman Mahbubey Alam, also the attorney general, told reporters that he was aware of the results which would be announced officially on August 31.
According to unofficial results the successful candidates of Samannoy Parishad panel are, senior Supreme Court lawyers, M Amirul Islam, Abdul Baset Majumder, Abdul Matin Khasru, and ZI Khan Panna, district bar association’s lawyers Kazi Nazibullah Hiru, HR Zahid Anwar, Md Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury, Parvez Alam Khan, Md Yahiya and Md Rezaul Karim.
The candidates won from Ainjibi Oikya Parishad panel are, bar council’s outgoing vice chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain, and members AJ Mohammad Ali and AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Kaimul Huq, who was elected from greater Comilla and Sylhet regions bar associations.
The bar council vice chairman would be selected through majority of votes by the winners, the lawyers said.
Khandker Mahbub Hossain, who is also the SCBA president, told reporters at his office that they would co-operate with the new committee.
BNP-backed panel had won majority seats in the bar council election after 43 years in 2012, Khandker Mahbub said.  About BNP’s panel debacle in regional posts of the bar council, Khandker Mahbub said, there was some resentment among the regional lawyers over getting sufficient benevolent fund which they could not meet.
Counting of ballots in the election to the Bangladesh Bar Council ended on Thursday after the lawyers cast their votes daylong across the country on Wednesday.
As many as 43,302 voters were to cast their ballots to elect their 14-member executive body of the lawyers’ regulatory body, from 61 contestants.
