Winter retreats as temperatures rise
The Met Office said that the people in northern districts were likely passing the last cold days of this winter with temperatures rising across Bangladesh in 24 hours ending Sunday morning.
The country’s minimum temperature of 9.1°C was recorded at Tetulia with trace amount of rains in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Khulna and Barishal in 24 hours until Sunday morning.
The Met Office said that the rain cleared the cloud and the temperature might fall by up to 3°C on Monday but that would be a momentary fall and would not intensify the feeling of cold in most of the country.
‘There may be pockets of cold weather in Rangpur and Khulna but it won’t be a big deal,’ weather forecaster AKM Nazmul Haque told New Age.
‘And, this is likely the end of this winter as temperatures would keep rising with long sunshine hours,’ he said.
On Sunday, the minimum temperature in the capital was recorded at 17°C.
The country’s maximum temperature of 29.2°C was recorded at Teknaf.
The Met Office said that the maximum temperature may rise by up to 2°C in north-western part but remain unchanged elsewhere in the country.
Light fog may disrupt visibility at places in the early hours and morning of Monday, said the Met Office.
February is the last winter month on the meteorological calendar.
The Met Office predicted hailstorms and cloud bursts in the second half of the month in parts of the country.
This winter has been relatively colder compared to past three years with frequent cold waves sweeping across the country and dense fog disrupting visibility in a good part of the days in December and January.
The Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room said that at least 3,646 people were hospitalised or treated at government hospitals across Bangladesh because of cold related diseases in 24 hours ending Friday morning.
The health emergency control room said that 61 people died because of cold related diseases since November 1, mostly in northern Bangladesh.
