7yrs of Twaki Murder Eminent citizens seek PM’s intervention for trial
Twenty-six eminent citizens of the country on Sunday in a statement sought prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s intervention for immediate submission of charge sheet and beginning of trial in the case of Tanvir Mohammad Tawki murder in Narayanganj seven years ago.
Twaki, an A Level student in ABC School in Narayanganj, son of Rafiur Rabbi, went missing on March 6, 2013 and his body was found on the bank of Shitalakhya at Narayanganj after two days.
The citizens, in the statement, said that it was a matter of pain and sorrow that the charge sheet in Twaki murder case was yet to be submitted to the court though March 6 will mark seven years since he was murdered.
It said that the agency involved in investigating the much-publicised case, in a press conference within a year of the murder, claimed to have unearthed the mystery and published names of the criminals as well as the place, time and motive behind the murder.
But, they said, though years have elapsed after that press conference, the charge sheet was not submitted to the court.
‘As justice was not delivered in the murder, the offenders are being encouraged and a shadow of doubt is now cast over the independence of the judiciary. We do not expect this in an independent country,’ the statement read.
‘We want the prime minister’s directive and intervention so that the trial process would soon commence after the submission of the charge sheet,’ it said.
The signatories in the statement include language movement hero and writer Ahmad Rafique, national professor Anisuzzaman, Dhaka University professor emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury, educationalist Sanjida Khatun and Abul Quasem Fazlul Haque, journalist Kamal Lohani, writers Hasan Azizul Huq and Jatin Sarker, Shujan secretary Badiul Alam Majumder, former advisor to caretaker government Sultana Kamal and economists Anu Muhammad and MM Akash.
