RAB progress report says 2 unidentified male took part in Sagar-Runi murder

The Rapid Action Battalion in its progress report submitted to the attorney general’s office on Monday said that at least two unidentified men took part in the sensational murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

The battalion in its report also said that it continued efforts to identify the two men by Independent Forensic Service and Paraban Snapshot Lab, both in the United States.

Battalion’s additional police superintendent Khandaker Shafiqul Alam, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted the report which would be placed before the  High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman today.

The bench on November 14, 2019 asked for the report.

The mystery of the double murder remained unsolved since February 11, 2012, when Sagar then news editor of Maasranga TV and his wife Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered at their rented flat at Paschim  Razabazar in Dhaka in front of their minor son Megh.

The progress report said that it found DNA of the two identified people took part the murder.

The battalion also said that it would not be logical to say at this stage of the investigation that the victims’ family friend Tanvir Rahman was not involved in the murders.

It said that Tanvir’s behaviour was ‘mysterious before and after the murders’ as he did not call Runi after the murder although he used to call her every day before the murder.

‘Runi and Tanvir last contacted each other at about 12:15am on the day of the murders,’ said the battalion adding, ‘Tanvir even did not join the funeral.’

In the earlier hearing on November 14, 2019, the High Court said that it expected that the battalion would unearth the motive of the murders, identify the real accused and arrest them after completing the investigation at quickest period.

The bench directed the investigator to submit a report on whether the couple’s family friend Tanvir was involved in the murders.

The bench also exempted Tanvir, now on bail, from physical appearance during the hearing by the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, until the filing of the filed charge sheet.

On April 18, 2012, the High Court transferred the case to the battalion for expeditious investigation.
