SUST suspends 4 BCL activists

Shahjalal University of Science and Technology authorities on Tuesday suspended four Bangladesh Chhatra League activists from the university for Sunday’s attack on teachers, who were staging a sit-in for the removal of the
vice-chancellor.
The vice-chancellor, Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, confirmed the news and said that the four activists of the ruling Awami League-backed student organisation – Ariful Islam, Dhaniram Raj, Zahid Hossain and Abdullah Al Mamun – were also notified to show cause.
Earlier on Monday night, Chhatra League central committee suspended its SUST unit vice-presidents Anjan Roy and Abu Sayed Akand and joint-secretary Sajidul Islam Sabuj for the attack.
The three were also asked to explain by Tuesday why they would not be expelled from the organisation, Chhatra League sources said.
On Sunday, 10 teachers were injured as Chhatra League activists attacked a section of pro-Awami League teachers, who were staging a sit-in in front of the vice-chancellor’s office demanding his removal.
The protesting teachers staged demonstrations on the campus on Tuesday as part of their three-day programmes protesting at the attack.
They gathered in front of cafeteria on the campus wearing black-badges and brought out a procession that marched to the vice-chancellor’s office building and held a rally there, witnesses said.
Addressing the rally, the teachers said that steps must be taken against Aminul first as he instigated and led the Chhatra League activists to attack teachers.
They demanded immediate removal of Aminul.
Former SUST Teachers Association general secretary Faruk Uddin conducted the rally that addressed, among others, by Muktizuddher Cetanay Udbuddha Shikkhak Parisad convener Syed Shamsul Alam, Hasanuzzaman Shyamal, Anwarul Islam Dipu and Muhibul Alam.
Shamsul Alam said that they would take all scheduled examinations during their protests since they did not want to make any interruption in the academic activities.
The teachers would observe three-hour work abstention today and four-hour token hunger strike on Thursday, he said.
In a reaction after the rally, author Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, also a teacher at the university, said that the vice-chancellor should withdrawn without any further delay, if the allegations brought against him were found true.
SUST Teachers Association president Kabir Hossain in a statement condemned the attack on the teachers and demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers.
He also urged the government to take immediate step to restore the congenial atmosphere on the campus.
Muktizuddher Cetanay Udbuddha Shikkhak Parisad, a forum of the pro-AL teachers, started their protests on April 20 for Aminul’s removal on allegation of irregularities, nepotism and misbehaviours with the teachers.
Thirty five senior teachers, including Zafar Iqbal, had resigned from 37 administrative posts expressing ‘no-confidence’ in Aminul.
Samajik Pratirodh Committee, a platform of 70 rights and social organisations, protested against the attack on the teachers.
The committee, in a release signed by Bangladesh Mahila Parishad president Ayesha Khanam, demanded stern actions against the perpetrators.
Leaders of Khulna district unit of `Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee also condemned the attack.
