ABRAR FAHAD MURDER Case transferred to Speedy Trial Tribunal-1
A Dhaka court on Wednesday transferred the trial of the murder case of Bangladesh University of Engineering student Abrar Fahad to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 as per the law ministry’s decision.
Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Qayes also fixed the day for hearing the framing of charges on April 6 against 25 students of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology for killing Abrar Fahad.
The court was scheduled to hear the charge framing on Wednesday but did not hear it after the law ministry issued a gazette notification for transferring the case to the speedy trial tribunal.
Eight of the 25 suspects in their statements confessed to the court that they were involved with torturing Abrar. A total 31 prosecution witnesses are mentioned on the charge sheet.
Trial in case was shifted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court from Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on January 13.
The investigators found involvement of 22 students through the CCTV footage, while the rest three were named by the corroborative evidences and reported confessions.
Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering, was tortured to death by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders in Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 7, reportedly for his critical views on social media over the recently signed deals between Bangladesh and India. His killing triggered nationwide protest and academic activities in his university was yet to become normal.
Three of the accused Morsheduzzaman Jesan, Ehatashamul Haque Rabbi Tanim and Mostafa Rafid were absconding while the rest were in jail.
