Govt bans tourist gathering on Cox’s Bazar, Patenga beaches

Authorities in of Cox’s Bazar and Chattogram on Wednesday slapped ban on gathering of people on the sea beaches in Cox’s Bazar and Patenga of Chattogram as people began crowding the tourist destinations following closure of educational institutions over coronavirus situation.

Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner Md Kamal Hossain issued a circular banning gathering of tourists in Cox’s Bazar from Wednesday afternoon.

He told reporters that tourists from home and abroad are banned at Cox’s Bazar resort town from Wednesday over coronavirus fear.

All kinds of gathering including amusements are banned in the district, he said.

Om March 16, the government announced closure of all educational institutions till March 31. 

Uitilising the closure, hundreds of tourists from other districts went to Cox’s Bazar for recreation.

Cox’s Bazar civil surgeon Mahabubur Rahman told New Age that three suspected coronavirus carriers were in home quarantine in the district. Those people returned from Italy and other countries.

Cox’s Bazar jail super Md Mokammel Hossain said that at least 39 Myanmar citizens are under quarantine in Cox’s Bazar jail from March 15.

They were held by Coast Guard Bangladesh from Bay of Bengal near at St Martin Island in February.

Police in Chattogram imposed a ban on gathering at Patenga sea beach in the port city on Wednesday afternoon to prevent risk of spreading coronavirus.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police commissioner Mahbubur Rahman said that the ban came into effect from Wednesday afternoon to curb the risk of spreading coronavirus.

Additional police were deployed at two entry points to the beach from Wednesday afternoon to bar people gathering there, said Utpal Barua, officer-in-charge of Patenga Police Station.      

Chattogram mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said that four hospitals were ready to serve patients of COVID-19.
