CORONAVIRUS WHO suggests partial lockdown in Bangladesh

The World Health Organisation on Saturday suggested Bangladesh government put the country under partial or complete lockdown to prevent spread of the novel coronavirus.

A delegation of WHO, led by its representative to Bangladesh Bardan Jung Rana, came up with the suggestion while meeting Dhaka South City Corporation mayor Sayeed Khokon at his Banani residence in the afternoon.

The DSCC mayor shared the outcome of the meeting with the journalists.

Bangladesh on Thursday  locked down Shibchar upazila in Madaripur as many of the COVID-19 patients were identified from the area.

Many expatriates returned from different countries in the area, health minister Zahid Maleque said on Thursday, adding that Faridpur was also one of the vulnerable area.

The minister also said that more areas would be locked down if situation worsened.

Bangladesh on Saturday confirmed second death from COVID-19. So far, 24 people were identified with the infections with the novel virus.

The government earlier closed educational institutions and restricted entry from European countries except United Kingdom.

Bangladesh on Thursday suspended flights to and from 10 countries including India, Bahrain, KSA, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Singapore, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

After meeting the WHO delegation, Sayed Khokon said that during the meeting, the WHO team said many affected countries benefited by putting their country under lockdown.

So, Bangladesh government can consider the step in this situation, they said, Khokon testified.

WHO was also apprehensive that the situation in the country may deteriorate further and said social distancing is necessary right now, Khokon said.

The new coronavirus disease COVID-19 already wreaked a global havoc killing over 11,000 people and infecting over 2.5 lakh others. The virus spread to over 170 countries, forcing many countries to lock down cities and territories and suspending flights.
