Government hides info to cover up incompetence: BNP

The government is pursuing a policy to hide the actual figure of coronavirus infections in Bangladesh to cover up its incompetence in the management of equipment for and treatment of the patients, said the Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Monday.

The government has even failed to provide the doctors and healthcare workers with urgent personal protective equipment, lamented the party’s senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

Addressing an online  press conference from the party’s central office at Naya Paltan in Dhaka, Rizvi said that the people had lost their faith in the government information about the number of COVID-19 patients and the number of deaths.

He also said that the government and its healthcare facilities seriously lacked the mechanism and capability to test the patients with suspected COVID-19, while many people with symptoms akin to coronavirus were moving hospital to hospital for treatment, but they were not getting treatment, and somebody had died without care.

‘In this present situation, the government’s policy is absolutely clear to the people. No kit, no corona. No test, no corona. No patient, no corona. Iran and Italy, following the same policy, had ruined their countries and become isolated from the whole world,’ he said.

‘Besides, all who came from abroad were not examined and the unidentified people had created risk of spreading the virus at geometric rate in society,’ he added.

He demanded that the government should begin testing all the people who came in contact of the detected ones.

Rizvi demanded steps to give PPE to doctors and medical staff, spread disinfectant on public transports, and to release the prisoners, who were yet to face trials or be punished.
