It’s ‘loan package’ for rich, says BNP

BNP on Sunday said that the ‘stimulus package’ announced by the prime minister earlier in the day was actually a ‘loan package’ for the industry owners, and not grants for the hand to mouth workers and the other common people.

Giving his party’s reaction on the issues, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at a press briefing at his Uttara residence in the capital said that the government might claim that it had announced a Tk 72.75 thousand crore package but actually it’s nothing but a loan package and no grants for the needy groups.

‘We had appealed to the government to provide Tk 15,000 crore to common  people as grants.’

‘We had also demanded incentives for the farmers and health sector,’ he said.

Fakhrul said that the country’s main challenge now was to keep the workers in the informal sectors  safe at homes.

He said that after staying home over the past one week created the compulsion for them to come out.

He said that the PM said that social safety net would be widened without specifying how the government would do it and for whom.

Fakhrul said that the PM was silent about the health sector and the burning issue of providing  sufficient kits for coronavirus tests, installing ventilators and those directly involved with  coronavirus treatment.

He criticized the government’s lack of coordination in tackling the crisis.
