2 killed by truck as police disperse RMG workers

At least two people were ran over and killed by a truck when several hundred workers ran away to escape police action on workers to disperse them at Jamirdia area of Bhaluka in Mymensingh on Monday.

Locals said that one of the dead is garment worker Harun, but the other could not be identified.

They said that Crown Wears Private Limited workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway demanding unpaid wages at about 10:00am.

As police tried to remove the workers, they got into a scuffle and later clash.

Police charged batons, threw tear gas shells and fired blanks to disperse the workers who ran away to escape the police action.

At one stage, two people were run over by a speeding truck and died on the spot.

After hitting the two, the truck veered off and overturned.

Workers claimed that several other workers also injured at the police beating.

Bhaluka police station officer-in-charge Main Uddin claimed that there was no relation between the death of the people and the police action.

In fact, the incident happened after police removed the workers from the road, he added.

No case was lodge and none was arrested, he said in the evening.

Police seized the truck and sent the driver to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.
