Miseries multiply as floods worsen further
The torments of the flood affected people in the north of the country intensified as flood situation deteriorated further on Friday due to onrush of upstream waters and incessant rains in the region.
Witnesses said newer places were flooded on the day, affecting many more fresh people.
Local people said that the poor were the worst victims of the prolonged flood as they live on their daily wages and that some areas lack job opportunities. A large part of their croplands was inundated, they added.
Many said their standing houses, especially built by mud walls, were under big threat of collapse because of the long-clogged waters.
The flood forecasting and warning centre of the water development board said the overall flood situation at places in north and central part of the country might deteriorate.
It said the water of Brahmaputra-Jamuna basin was still swelling which might continue for the next 72 hours.
The flows of the rivers surrounding the capital Dhaka were also rising which might likely to continue for the next 3 days, the forecast said.
The FFWC data show that river banks have busted because of excessive water at least at 22 river stations across the country.
New Age correspondent of Kurigram reports, the overall flood situation in the district worsened further as water level of all the rivers swelled again.
While visiting the affected areas on Friday, he found floodwater was increasing and engulfing newer areas.
About half kilometer of Kurigram-Jatrapur road went under increased level of floodwater on Friday and that the haat (village market) goers were seen using boats.
Our correspondent in Jamalpur reports, flood
situation in seven upazilas of the district further deteriorated as water level of the Jamuna river was flowing 54 cm over the danger mark at Bahadurabad ghat point on Friday noon.
During the last 24 hours Jamuna swelled up by 11cm at that point, officials in WDB said.
Due to the floods, 109 primary schools and 29 secondary schools and madrasahs had been shut for the past 11 days, district education officials said.
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that the flood situation in Gaibandha, too, deteriorated further on Friday.
