Singapore assures treatment, well-being of workers from Bangladesh

Singapore foreign minister Vivian Balakrishnan on Thursday assured the Bangladesh authorities of ensuring well-being of Bangladeshi workers in the Southeast Asian country.

Vivian gave the assurance in a discussion with his Bangladesh counterpart AK Abdul Momen over phone, according to a facebook post of the Singapore minister.
‘I explained to Minister Momen some of the health precautions we have taken, given the cluster of cases at several dormitories here. These workers have made significant contributions to Singapore, and we have a responsibility to provide for their well-being,’ said Vivian.
The two ministers exchanged notes and reaffirmed the need to work together to fight against COVID-19.
They also agreed to work together to facilitate the repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals and workers willing to return home, and to bring Singaporeans back home from Bangladesh, according to Vivian.

The Singapore authorities ensured continuation of salaries of the workers and regular supply of food to the dormitories where workers were living, according to a Bangladesh foreign ministry press released.

A total of 244 COVID-19 patients, out of 1481 found infected in the diseases in the island country, were Bangladeshis, the ministry said, adding that they were undergoing treatment in quarantine.
