Heath service providers to get 2 extra basic pays as reward

Health service providers treating COVID-19 patients in six dedicated government hospitals will enjoy two extra basic pays with their monthly salary as reward, said the finance ministry officials.

The hospitals are Kurmitola General Hospital, Sheikh Russel National Gastro Liver Institute and Hospital at Mohakhali, Kuwait Maitree Hospital at Uttara, Mother and Child Health Training Institute at Lalkuhti Bazar, Mahanagar General Hospital at Babubazar and Railway General Hospital at Kamalapur.

The Directorate General of Heath Service, however, did not start preparing the lists of doctors, nurses and health workers engaged in the hospitals yet, said its director Md Aminul Hasan.

The task will begin only after getting the official order, he said

He, however, estimated that the number of doctors, nurses and health workers would be around 2,000.

Health workers throughout the country along with public officials, army, police and BGB engaged in fighting the pandemic coronavirus would also come under the special health insurance coverage, said the finance ministry officials.

The officials said they had already finalised the guidelines on the reward and the health insurance which are likely to make public by the finance ministry soon.

On April 13, prime minister Sheikh Hasina announced that allocation of Tk 100 crore for giving reward to selective health workers in addition to run the health insurance policy in her nationwide speech on the eve of the Pahela Baishakh after many doctors expressed unwillingness to treat COVID-19 patients.

A day earlier, the government suspended six doctors of Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital in the capital allegedly for expressing unwillingness to treat such patients.

It is reported that over 20 doctors and a number of health service providers, including nurses, have been infected with the novel coronavirus in the country over the past two weeks.

Wednesday, the country reported first death of doctor, Moyeen Uddin, assistant professor of the medicine department of MAG Osmani Medical College in Sylhet, at Kurmitola General Hospital.

According to the finance ministry officials, health insurance coverage will be given to the health workers and others as per their ranks under two scenarios.

Under the first scenario, Tk 5 lakk will be given to the coronavirus positive government officials ranked between 15-grade and above, Tk 7.5 lakh for officials ranked from 10-grade to 14-grade and Tk 10 lakh for officials ranked from 1-grade to 9-grade.

Under the scenario two, the cash under the health coverage will be five times higher if anybody dies of COVID-19.
