2 Awami League leaders among nine more arrested for rice theft
At least nine more people, including two Awami League leaders, were arrested and two others fined for misappropriating government rice in different parts of the country in 24 hours ending Friday evening.
New Age correspondent in Barishal reported that the Barishal correspondent also reported that a mobile court on Friday sentenced Banaripara upazila AL vice-president AKM Yusuf Ali to six-month imprisonment for thieving and selling government rice, meant for distributing among day labourers under food for work programme, in black market.
New Age Staff Correspondent in Chattogram, quoting Fatikchhari upazila nirbahi officer Md Sayedul Arefin, reported that the local administration arrested open market sale dealer Sarwar Jahan Babul, his business partner Khokon, and a rickshaw puller Kabir Ahmed from Azadi Bazar in the upazila on Friday, as Sarwar and Babul had been selling four sacks of government rice to Kabir.
In Gopalganj, Rapid Action Battalion-8 arrested a former member of Shuktail union parishad, Mannan Sheikh, from his home at village Shuktail under Gopalganj sadar upazila in the district and seized 345 kilograms of rice from his possession, RAB officials said.
New Age correspondent from Khulna reported that a mobile court, led by Koyra upazila assistant commissioner (land) Nur-e-Alam Siddique, fined Murshid Alam, a villager of Tentultala under Koyra in the district, Tk 20,000 as he bought four sacks of government rice from local OMS dealer Billal Hossain in black market.
New Age correspondent in Patuakhali reported that police arrested Jainkathi union Awami League acting general secretary Mohammad Ibrahim, also an OMS dealer of Sehakathi bazaar, his assistant Zakir Hossain Sana and two customers while selling of three sacks of government rice.
Besides, Sundarganj upazila administration in Gaibandha seized 50 sacks of government rice from an abandoned house in village Domerhat in the upazila early Friday, said upazila nirbahi officer Quazi Lutful Hasan.
