Flood-hit people cry for foods, drinking water

Flood affected people in the north and central parts of the country were in want of food and safe drinking water at their homes and makeshift shelters.
Reports received from across the districts on Sunday said a good number of calamity victims had been suffering badly as the government assistances were inadequate and that the relief goods were yet to reach many affected areas.
Safe drinking water crisis turned acute as the tube-wells got inundated. To add to their miseries, the affected people had no works in hands to buy their daily essentials.
No report of distributing relief materials by non-governmental organisations, so far, was received until Sunday afternoon.
According to the reports, flood situation worsened in parts of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts while it improved in Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts.
The situation remained unchanged in the central districts of parts of the Manikganj, Rajbari, Munshiganj and Shariatpur.
The situation worsened mainly due to onrush of upstream waters, the reports said.
The flood forecasting and warning centre of Bangladesh Water Development Board on Sunday morning forecasted that the situation in the northern districts might improve in the next 48 hours, putting pressure of extra waters in the central districts.
On Sunday morning, water was flowing above danger level at 23 river stations across the country, the FFWC data show.
It said that the Brahmaputra-Jamuna flows were still swelling which might remain steady in the next 72 hours and the Padma flows were also rising which might remain steady in the next 48 hours.
New Age Correspondent in Kurigram reported that most of over two lakh flood hit people were passing their days on high roads and inundated homes in utter hardship for want of foods and safe drinking water as they did not get any relief.
Kohinur Begum, 40, of village Palashbari under Kurigram Sadar said they had been passing their miserable days on stages made of bamboos in their rooms for the past 14 days. She said her family members were not properly fed and they were yet to receive relief materials.
She said she and her husband used to live on their daily wages by toiling in other peoples’ farmlands. But, now they were duck sitting.
Afsar Ali, 52, of Hatiya village under Ulipur upazila who, along with his five other family members, have taken shelter in a makeshift shanty on an embankment for the past
10 days said their condition is ‘pathetic’ as they are passing days almost starving.
Kaliganj union parishad chairman Nur Islam of Nageshwari upazila said most places in his union were under water and that he received scanty amount of relief.
The district administration has so far distributed 250 metric tones of rice and Tk 6.5 lakh in cash among the flood affected people in the district.
Kurigram deputy commissioner Khan Md Nurul Amin said he had sought a cash allocation of taka 10 lakh and 500 metric tones of rice for the flood victims.
Our Correspondent in Bogra reports, the flood situation in the worst affected Sariyakandi and Sonatala upazilas worsened further and that more people arrived on the higher roads for shelter on Sunday.
Affected people of some villages including Aadbaria, Karamjapara, Hashidpur, Nayapara, Dighapara and Mathurapara under Sariyakandi upazila and Hatiyamari, Chukainagar,
Pakulla and Maheshpara villages under Sonatala upazila said they had been marooned for over a month without any relief.
A total of about 1.5 lakh people are affected in the upazila.
Sonatala Upazila Nirbahi officer Habibur Rahman told New Age that he had asked for relief goods and would distribute those soon after he obtains.
Our Correspondent in Jamalpur reported that flood situation worsened in the district on Sunday where about 2.6 lakh people from all the seven upazilas were affected.
