BAPA protests at bringing toxic waste carrying ship for breaking in Ctg

The Chattogram chapter of Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon on Friday protested at bringing of a ship carrying toxic wastes from an Indonesian port to Chattogram for breaking it.

BAPA protested at this in a statement following a media report that a ship containing 1,500 tonnes of mercury contaminated wastes, 1,000 tonnes of toxic slog oil, 60 tonnes of toxic slug oil and other toxic wastes was heading towards Bangladesh for its dismantling.

The statement by Chattogram BAPA unit president M Sikandar Khan and general secretary ABM Abu Noman said that according to the report the ship, J Nut, carrying toxic wastes left Batam Sea Port of Indonesia for breaking at a location of Chattogram coast.

‘It can be perceived that any dishonest ship breaking company in Bangladesh had made the initiative to bring the ship for their business purpose,’ the release said.

It said that there was no provision of breaking any ship carrying such toxic wastes but it was going to be happening.

Mentioning that the ship carrying toxic wastes was threatening for human lives and for the environment, BAPA protested at the initiatives and urged the authorities concerned to take proper action against it.
