Government to extend general holiday till May 16 in Bangladesh

The government is going to extend the ongoing general holiday till May 16 from May 6 to fight the spread on novel coronavirus as the death toll from COVID 19 and the number detected patients keep rising during.

‘We have proposed further extension of the holiday for another 10 days as the COVID-19 infection keeps rising,’ state minister for public administration Farhad Hossain told New Age on Saturday.

He said that the proposal was sent to the prime minister for approval.

This would be the fifth extension of the general holiday that began on March 26 to ensure social distancing for containing the spread of novel coronavirus that claimed 175 lives and infected at least 8,790 in Bangladesh till Saturday morning.

In the latest instance, the public administration ministry on April 23 in a circular extended the general holiday till May 5, but allowed the management of industries, including pharmaceuticals and export oriented factories, to reopen ensuring the workers’ safety and healthcare.

The official order said that factories, agricultural sector and public transports would be opened gradually considering the situation.

The proposal for reopening more sectors was under the prime minister’s consideration, the state minister said.

The government has banned all public transports during the shutdown beginning from March 26.
