Private hospital booked as Covid-19 affects 1,448 cops

The police authorities have booked a 250-bed private hospital in Dhaka for their officials and rankers as the number of COVID-19-infected personnel reached 1,448 on Friday.

The police headquarters spokesperson and assistant inspector general (media and public relations) Sohel Rana in statement said on Friday that the hospital was hired for two and a half months and only police members would be treated at the hospital.

Earlier on May 5, the police officials said an agreement was signed between the Central Police Hospital and Impulse Hospital in Dhaka.

‘The police members will shortly be treated at the Impulse Hospital,’ he said. 

Since April 28, at least six police rankers died of COVID-19 until Friday. Half of the deaths are at the public order management division in Mirpur.

According to the police headquarters data, the number of infected police personnel — ranging from constable to superintendent — reached 1,448 on Friday. The figure was 328 on May 1. The case of recovery was 55 on May 1 while the number reached by a week only 98.

At least 2,870 police personnel were quarantined until Friday as the number was only 1,179 just on May 5 and only 466 with symptoms of COVID-19 were kept in isolation.

Sohel Rana said that according to an order of prime minister Sheikh Hasina the arrangement was made and the authorities were providing highest treatment to the affected members under the direct supervision of inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed.
