Jamaat’s nayeb-e-amir, ASG, 11 other leaders arrested
Thirteen leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami including two top leaders were arrested from the capital’s Pallabi area on Monday.
The party’s nayeb-e-amir Mujibur Rahman, also a former MP, is among the arrested people. The other former MP is Mia Ghulam Parwar, also assistant secretary general of the party.
Police also recovered 20 high-powered bombs from the house in Mirpur section 11, said Pallabi police officer-in-charge Dadan Fakir.
He said the 13 leaders of Jamaat were arrested in a drive from 11am to 4pm from House-4, Road-10, Section-11 of Mirpur.
‘Acting on a tip-off that the Jamaat leaders were holding a secret meeting to carry out subversive activities, the detectives and Pallabi police conducted the drive’, the OC added.
The others arrestees are Kafrul thana Jamaat president Mohammad Taslim, house owner Harunur Rashid, also a leader of Jamaat-backed workers organisation Sramik Kalyan Federation, Abul Kalam Azad, Munsur Rahman, Zakir Hossain, Jahangir Alam, Nurullah alias Mohammadullah, Abul Hashem, Sabbir, Mujibur Rahman Bhuyan and Ashraful Alam Iqbal.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mirpur division additional deputy commissioner, Masud Ahmed, told New Age that the house from where they were arrested was owned by a local Jamaat leader, Harunur Rashid.
The arrestees gathered at the house from different places of the country including Chittagong, Rajshahi and Sylhet, he said.
They were sent to DMP’s detectives branch.
DMP’s deputy commissioner [DB West] Sajjadur Rahman at a press conference at DMP media centre in the evening said the Jamaat leaders were planning to carry out subversive activities in Dhaka and its adjacent areas and creating chaos among garments workers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
He said they were trying to cash in on the labour unrest of garments factories ahead of Eid.
Sajjad said the arrestees would be produced before court and seek their remand in DB custody.
