Infections up due to reopening of businesses, factories: Zahid

Health minister Zahid Maleque on Thursday said that the number of people infected with COVID-19 increased as the government allowed factories and business entities to reopen — though on a limited scale — considering the livelihood of people.

‘People are gathering unnecessarily. The reopening of the businesses have become a reason for the increase in the number of infected people and the number will rise some more,’ the minister said.

Zahid was addressing a reception to the newly-appointed 5,000 nurses at the nursing and midwifery directorate general’s conference room in the capital.

He said that such increase in infections would not be that much harmful as the infections and deaths in Bangladesh were lower than in other countries because of the government’s right decision at the right time.

He further said that the number of COVID-19 tests was raised several times over the past month as a result of which the authority became able to detect more patents.

He said that the large number of detections would help avert the risks of infection.

The number of the daily tests will go up to 10,000 immediately and it will be raised up to 15,000 in future, the minister said.

Chaired by Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery director general Siddika Akter, the event was addressed, among others, by Health Division secretary Ashadul Islam and Health Education and Family Welfare Division secretary M Ali Noor.
