Zia’s 39th death anniversary today
Bangladesh Nationalist Party founder and former president of the country Ziaur Rahman’s 39th anniversary of death is observed today.
Marking the day, BNP and its front and associate organisations and socio-cultural organisations have taken elaborate programmes avoiding mass gatherings due to COVID-19 outbreak.
The party takes 12-day programmes spanning May 30 to June 10 on this occasion.
The 7th president of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981, Ziaur Rahman was assassinated by a group of army officers at Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981.
Zia came to limelight by making the declaration of independence on behalf of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding president of the country, in March 1971.
He was a sector commander and led the Z Force during the Liberation War in 1971.
He was decorated for valour with the gallantry award Bir Uttam.
On November 7, 1975, he was freed from captivity by sepoys and the people and brought to power.
Born on January 19, 1936 at village Bagbari in Bogura, he became the president of the country in April 1977.
He founded BNP in 1978.
BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, in a message marking Zia’s death anniversary, on Friday said that Zia’s ideology, philosophy and programmes were safeguards for protecting independence, multiparty democracy, development and progress of the country.
To mark the day, the party will hoist black flags and keep party flag at half-mast atop the offices of the party, including its Nayapaltan headquarters, at 6:00am today.
The party secretary general along with standing committee members will place wreaths at Zia’s grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka at 11:00am and the party will arrange an online discussion in the afternoon in memory of the party founder.
BNP and its associate bodies will arrange virtual discussions on different topics on Zia’s activities every day between May 31 and to June 10 as part of the death anniversary programmes.
The party urged its leaders and activists to stand by the COVID-19-affected people without arranging public gatherings and to distribute food, clothes and money in cash among the people.
