Coronavirus Pandemic Infections, deaths double in Bangladesh in 2 weeks

Bangladesh logged 2,635 COVID-19 infections and 35 deaths from the infection in the 24 hours ending at 8:00am Saturday.

Thus the COVID-19 death toll in the country hit 846 and the infections totalled 63,026, said Nasima Sultana, additional director general of the Directorate General of Health Services, in the daily online bulletin on the COVID-19 situation.

She disclosed that 12,486 samples were tested in the 24 hours across the country and 2,635 of them were found infected.

Of the 35 dead, 25 died at hospitals, nine at home and one was brought dead to a hospital.

Bangladesh on March 8 confirmed its first three COVID-19 patients and on March 18 the first death from the disease.

The country entered the 14th week of infections on Sunday.

The recorded coronavirus infections more than doubled in the past 15 days in the country, with 30,205 infected persons reported on May 22 and 63,026 on Saturday (June 6).

The reported deaths from COVID-19 also more than doubled in the past 15 days, with 846 on Saturday while the figure was 432 on May 22.

The recorded infections and deaths marked sharp rises over the weeks — with 18,418 infections and 236 deaths logged in the 13th week, 12,530 infections and 158 deaths in the 12th week, 11,083 infections and 138 deaths in the 11th week and 7,225 infections and 100 deaths in the 10th week.

The infections started to increase considerably from the 10th week after the government eased the lockdown reopening markets, shopping malls and factories.

In the ninth week, the number of infections was 4,980 and that of deaths 29 while the eighth week saw 3,792 infections and 35 deaths.

The coronavirus infections and deaths were feared to soar in the coming days as the government on May 31 lifted restrictions on the public movement, reopening the public transports, businesses and offices.

Nasima in the daily bulletin said that 28 of the new 35 dead were male and seven female.

Two of the deceased were aged between 11 and 20 years, three between 21 and 30 years, two between 31 and 40 years, three between 41 and 50 years, 10 between 51 and 60 years, five between 61 and 70 years, nine between 71 and 80 years and one was aged above 81 years.

Twenty of them were in Dhaka division, eight in Chattogram, three in Rajshahi, two in Sylhet and two in Barishal division.

On Saturday, 7,162 suspected COVID-19 patients were in isolation.

Besides, in the past 24 hours, 521 more people were declared recovered from the virus infection as they did not show any symptoms of the disease.

The total number of the declared recovery so far is 13,325, said Nasima.
