Bangladesh emphasises reducing carbon emission at int’l forum

Environment minister Md Shahab Uddin attending at an online international seminar on Tuesday evening called for collective measures of the global community for reducing carbon emission while conducting development activities.

The seminar titled, ‘building a clean and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 crisis in support of the climate and sustainable development goals’ was co-hosted by Bangladesh and the United Kingdom missions to the UN and World Resources Institute.

‘Climate change and biodiversity loss could cause social and economic damages far larger than those caused by COVID-19,’ said the minister.

The environment minister said that in the perspective of the Paris Agreement the interventions for protecting the environment may vary from country to country depending on their development priorities, infrastructure needs and social circumstances.

But the main focus should be reducing adverse impacts on nature, he said, urging all nations to work together for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants.

The UK environment minister Zac Goldsmith, Korean director general for climate change wing of the foreign ministry Keeyong Chung, special representative of the UN secretary general Damilola Ogunbiyi, among others participated at the seminar moderated by Helen Mountford, vice-president of the Climate and Economics World Resources Institute.
