People lose faith in COVID-19 test: Obaidul

Ruling Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday admitted that people lost both their faith and interest in COVID-19 tests.

In a video message from his Jatiya Sangsad residence, Obaidul, also the road transport and bridges minister, said that the COVID-19 infection rate was rising though the number of tests was declining.

He said that according to health experts, the number of infected people was going up as patients were hiding themselves or overlooking the illness.

He said that people might have lost their interest and faith in the tests following the recent test forgery incidents by Regent Hospital and JKG Health Care.

He urged the authorities concerned to increase the number of tests and deliver reports as quickly as possible.

He also requested the authorities concerned to ensure free test facilities for the poor.

He called upon the authorities concerned to bring back patients’ confidence in hospitals by ensuring a proper health environment in the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Experts have alerted that if the rate of infections cannot be controlled now it can reach a higher level, he said, adding that public gathering therefore must be avoided during the forthcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

He went on that though the government decided to keep the vehicular movement on during the festival everyone must strictly go by the health guidelines during the Eid journey to keep themselves safe from being infected with the deadly virus.

He also urged people to be alert during their journeys for earning their livelihoods to safeguarding their lives from the danger of COVID-19 infection.

Pointing to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, the AL general secretary said that since the onset of the pandemic, a quarter had resorted to anti-government hate speech as their responsibility towards the country and its people.

Instead of extending their support to the government’s ongoing drives against corruption and irregularities they are out to make blind criticism of the government acts, he added.

He also said that the present AL government under the leadership of prime minister Sheikh Hasina took a zero-tolerance policy against corruption and took steps against all wrongdoers irrespective of party identity but no

other government did so in the past.

Due to fraudulence and forgery of some people, Obaidul said, the hopes and aspirations of the masses cannot be held hostage.
