Sabrina lands in jail, ACC seeks her info from 4 authorities

A Dhaka court on Monday sent JKG Healthcare chairperson and cardiac surgeon Sabrina Arif Chowdhury to jail rejecting her bail prayer in a case filed for COVID-19 test scams.

In another development, the Anti-Corruption Commission sent letters to the Bangladesh Financial Intel ligence Unit, the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, the National Board of Revenue and the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms on the day asking for different information about Sabrina and her husband Ariful Islam Chowdhury.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqul Islam passed the order after Sabrina was produced before the court by the Detective Branch of police after a two-day remand.

The court also asked police to interrogate JKG official Humayun Kabir Himu at jail gate for three days after police sought a seven-day remand for him.

ACC director for public relations Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee said that the commission deputy director Selina Akter sent the letters to the authorities.

In the letter sent to BFI, the ACC official asked the authorities to provide bank details of Sabrina and Arif. The NICVD was asked to provide all the professional details of Sabrina, said Pranab.

He said that the commission official asked NBR to give information about the couple’s tax files and returns while RJSCF was asked to provide their investment details.

Sabrina was arrested on July 11 by the Tejgaon police and on the following day she was remanded in to police custody for interrogation for three days.

She is an accused of embezzling Tk 8 crore – with the help of her husband Ariful Chowdhury – by forging and providing 15,460 fake medical reports.

DB investigators said that they have interrogated and crossed-examined Sabrina and Arif over the COVID-19 test scam when the couple continued to blame each other.

The National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases cardiac surgeon Sabrina has recently been suspended by the health ministry for her involvement with a private organisation without permission.

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent chief executive officer of JKG Healthcare Arif and his associate Sayeed to jail in the case lodged over issuing fake coronavirus test reports.

On July 13, the ACC launched an inquiry against JKG Healthcare chairperson Sabrina for her alleged involvement in private business despite being a government physician.

‘Following complaints from different sources, including media reports, the commission decided to launch an inquiry against Sabrina,’ said Pranab.
