VAT ON TUITION FEES : Door open for discussion, says Muhith

Finance minister AMA Muhith on Sunday said the ‘door was open’ for discussion on the demands of the private university students.
‘I hope they will sit for discussion,’ he told reporters after a meeting at his secretariat office which was also attended by commerce minister Tofail Ahmed.
Tofail said the government was looking for a realistic solution to the demand for withdrawal of 7.5 per cent value added tax.
The students have staged protests at the different key locations of the city for the fourth consecutive day, which paralysed the city’s traffic.
Already, several private universities declared early Eid vacation apparently to thwart students from agitating further.
Muhith said the government always reconsidered measures it took ‘for the welfare the people.’ The government is not rigid in its position, he said.
The government is under pressure from public university teachers who are threatening tougher movement to realise their demands, including review of the new pay scale.
