Social welfare minister dies
Social welfare minister Syed Mohsin Ali, who was undergoing treatment at Singapore General Hospital, died on Monday morning aged 67.
He died around 9:00am at the hospital, said his personal officer Abdul Kadir Pervez.
Mohsin Ali is survived by wife and three daughters.
President Abdul Hamid, prime minister Sheikh Hasina, cabinet colleagues, different political leaders and social organisations expressed shock at his death.
‘The nation has lost a dedicated politician and valiant freedom fighter in the death of Syed Mohsin Ali. His sad demise is really an irreparable loss to the country’s political arena,’ the president said in his condolence message.
In her message of condolence, the prime minister recalled his long political career and said the nation lost an honest and patriotic leader in his death.
The cabinet on Monday adopted an obituary reference expressing profound shock and sorrow at the death of Mohsin.
Syed Mohsin Ali was taken to Singapore on September 5 with life support for better treatment as he suffered a heart attack.
The minister was admitted to BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka on September 3 with various complications, including pneumonia and kidney problems. He was on life support at the hospital.
The following day, he suffered a heart attack while undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and was kept under mechanical ventilation since then.
New Age correspondent from Moulvibazar reported that Syed Salman Ali, youngest brother of Mohsin, said the body would be brought to the country Tuesday night.
He will be buried at the graveyard of Hazrat Syed Shah Mostafa (RA) Mazar Sharif. But the time of Janaza and burial has not been fixed yet.
Mohsin Ali was president of Moulvibazar district Awami League and mayor of Moulvibazar Municipality for three times. He took part in war of liberation in 1971 at the age of 23 years.
Mohsin Ali was born in December 12, 1948 at Darjir Mohol of Moulvibazar district town.
He was elected member of the 9th parliament in 2008 election for the first time defeating former finance minister M Saifur Rahman.
