Bangladesh Liberation War Sector Commander CR Datta dies

Retired major general Chitta Ranjan Datta, better known as CR Datta, the commander of Sector Four during Bangladesh’s War of Liberation in 1971 died in Florida, USA on Tuesday.  He was 93.

Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad general secretary Rana Dasgupta told New Age that the organisation’s founding president CR Datta breathed his last at a Florida hospital at about 9:30am Bangladesh Standard Time in USA.

He said that they were trying to bring back CR Datta’s body in Bangladesh for his funeral by respecting his final wish.

The organisation earlier in a statement on Monday said that Datta had been placed on a ventilator at the hospital and that his liver had already failed.

Quoting his family, the organisation said Datta suddenly fell in the bathroom of the residence of his daughter Kavita Dasgupta and broke his leg on August 20.

Later, he was rushed to the hospital where his condition deteriorated rapidly.

CR Datta left behind two daughters, a son and a host of relatives to mourn his death.

CR Datta was born on January 1, 1927, in Shillong, Assam.

His ancestral home is in Mirashi village under Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj.

He joined the Pakistan Army in 1951.

Later he got commission in the post of ‘Second Lieutenant’.

During the liberation war, he was in charge of Sector-4.

He was awarded the title of Bir Uttam for his special contribution in the war of liberation.

He was also a former chairman of Bangladesh Freedom Fighters Welfare Trust and Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation.
