Hilsa sent to India

The first consignment hilsa was sent to India through Benapole land port on Monday.

Officials of Benapole custom house said that Jahanabad Sea Foods Ltd, Khulna exported the first consignment, weighing 12 tonnes, to JK International in Kolkata.

The government has given a special permission to export nearly 1,475 tonnes of hilsa to India on the eve of Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community.

Last year, the government approved export of 500 tonnes of hilsa to India before Durga Puja due to a request from the West Bengal authorities.

Commerce minister Tipu Munshi on Sunday told  New Age that permission had been given to nine traders to export 1,475 tonnes of hilsa to India as a token of ‘good gesture’ ahead of Durga Puja.

Export of hilsa had remained banned since 2012 as the government included the fish in the list of export-restricted items.
