Four killed as Rohingya groups clash in Cox’s Bazar
At least four Rohingya people including the second in command of Master Munna group were killed in an intragroup clash in the Kutupalang Rohingya camps in Ukhia of Cox’s Bazar on Tuesday night, according to officials.
Rapid Action Battalion officials said that Mahmudullah Gias Uddin, brother of Munna, was killed along with three others during the clash.
RAB officials said that the Munna group leader Munna, known as Master Munna, was ‘abducted’ during the incident that took place between 6:15pm and 6:45pm on Tuesday as a sequel to a series of recent clashes inside the camps in recent weeks.
A video footage showed that Mahmudullah was being beaten publicly.
Mohammad Shamsu Douza, Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, told New Age on Tuesday that four including the brother of Munna were found killed in the evening.
‘We are not entirely clear about the motive behind the killing, however an investigation is on,’ said the additional commissioner, adding that ‘security was tightened and forces were mobilised amid the situation.’
He said army along with police and other security agencies were intensifying their patrolling.
Rohingya leaders said Master Munna was trying to leave the camp with his family members by a microbus but he was caught and went missing afterwards.
Mohammad Rafiqul Islam, additional superintendent of police in Cox’s Bazar, said that they recovered four bodies from the camp.
The law enforcement agencies said that at least four others, including a member of Ansar and VDP were injured during the exchange of fire and the clash that broke out in the dark.
The Ansar member, Al Amin, 23, was injured at about 6:50pm when he was on duty. Other injured were identified as Kolim Ullah, Mohammad Jabar and Mohmmad Zafor.
None claimed the responsibilities of the attack but the Rohingya community people said that the Al Yakin sympathisers were behind the killing.
Tuesday’s clash took place just two days after a series of clashes between two rival groups had killed at least two people, all of them Rohingyas, in the Kutupalang camps.
Another person was found killed on the following day, prompting the Rapid Action Battalion and the Armed Police Battalion to carry out separate operations.
Another senior security official said that a number of groups including of Master Munna and Abdus Sukkur had been engaged in tussles over extortion of money from the markets and shops inside the camps.
On Tuesday, the RAB said they arrested nine Rohingya armed miscreants from different camps and recovered four locally made guns and bullets.
