Mujib Sculpture Dhaka court orders probe into sedition case against Hefazat leaders

A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday asked the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate two cases filed with court on charge of sedition against Hefazat-e-Islami Bangladesh chief Junaid Babunagari and two others for their alleged remarks on the installation of sculpture of the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Besides, the ruling Awami League, its front organisations and different pro-AL organisations continued demonstration in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country protesting against damaging Mujib’s sculpture in Kushtia on Saturday and vowed to resist the anti-sculpture quarter.

Meanwhile, police on Monday produced the four arrested in connection with Kushtia sculpture damage before Kushtia additional Chief Judicial Cognizance Court judge Rezaul Karim  seeking a 10-day remand for the arrested two Ibne Mas-Ud Qawmi Madrassah students Abu Bakkar alias Mithun and Sabuj Islam alias Nahid and a seven-day remand for their two teachers Al Amin and Yusuf Ali.

Kushtia sadar police station investigation officer Nishikanta Sarker produced the four accused before the court that set today for hearing the petition and sent the four to jail, New Age Islamic University correspondent in Kushtia reported.

New Age court correspondent reported that Muktijuddha Mancha president Aminul Islam Bulbul filed a case to Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court judge Satyabrata Shikder against Babunagari, Hefazat joint secretary general Mamunul Haque and Islami Andolan Bangladesh nayebe amir Syed Faizul Karim, alleging that their remarks against installing Bangabandhu’s sculpture was nothing but sedition.

The plaintiff in the case said that Mamunul in a meeting at the capital’s BMA Bhaban and Faizul in a sermon at Gandaria near Dholaikhal in Dhaka on November 13 made inciting and threatening remarks against the installation of Mujib’s sculpture and Babunagari later in a programme in Chattogram backed their remarks.

Besides, Bangabandhu Foundation founder Moshiur Malek, a lawyer by profession, filed another case to the same court against Mamunul Haque bringing the same allegation.

They also appealed to the court to issue arrest warrants against the accused for their alleged involvement in ‘tarnishing the image of the government and creating anarchy’ across the country.

Judge Satyabrata Shikder recorded the statement of the plaintiffs and asked the Police Bureau of Investigation to investigate the allegations and submit its report by January 7, 2021.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh Mahila Sramik League brought out a procession from the Awami League central office on Bangabandhu Avenue and held a short rally at the same place after parading through nearby roads protesting against vandalising Mujib’s sculpture.

Bangabandhu Bhaskarja Bastabayan Parishad in a human chain in front of the National Press Club also demanded the immediate completion of the installation of Mujib’s sculpture at Dholaipar in Dhaka and the installation of the sculpture in all the cities and district towns.

The Dhaka University Teachers’ Association, Chattogram University and Islamic University units of Bangabandhu Parishad and teachers and employees of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University formed separate human chains on their respective campuses demanding the arrest of all involved in vandalising Mujib’s sculpture in Kushtia and their patrons.

They also vowed to resist the ‘fundamentalist forces’ that are opposing installation of sculpture in the country.
