Clash over municipality polls leaves one killed in Chattogram

A man was killed and eight others were injured in a clash between the supporters of two councillor candidates of Patiya municipality polls in Chattogram on Sunday noon.

The deceased was identified as Md Abdul Mabud, brother of councillor candidate Md Abdul Mannan of Ward No. 8.

Confirming the matter, Tarique Rahman, additional superintendent of police (Patiya circle) of Chattogram district, said that the incident happened at South Gobindorkhil area of Patiya.

The injured are Md Hasan, 23, Mobasik Zannat, 30, Md Fahim, 18, Abdullah Al Mahmud, 18, Nusrat, 20, Jalal Uddin, 25, Md Ashek, 25, and Md Idris, 60.

They were undergoing treatments at Patiya upazila health complex.

Local sources said supporters of councillor candidates Md Abdul Mannan and Sarwar Kamal Mosleh Uddin Razib of Ward No.8 engaged in clashes at the South Gobindorkhil area at about noon. Both groups fired bullets at each other.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Party-backed mayoral candidate Md Shamsul Alam for the Patiya municipality polls boycotted the polls at about 2:00 pm.
