Husband gets bail in RU student Sifat murder case
The Appellate Division on Sunday granted bail to Asif Prisley in a case of provoking his wife Wahida Sifat, a former Rajshahi University student, to commit suicide in 2015.
The four-judge bench chaired by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain allowed Asif to appeal against a directive of the High Court that on September 6, 2020 asked the Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 to hold a fresh trial in the case.
The court gave the order after hearing a petition filed by Asif seeking permission to appeal against the HC judgement.
The HC in the verdict earlier cancelled the tribunal’s judgement that on February 29, 2017 sentenced Asif to 10 years imprisonment and acquitted his parents Ramzan Hossain and Nazmun Nahar from charge of provoking.
The tribunal also acquitted Rajshahi Medical College forensic expert Zobaidur Rahman from the charge of negligence by preparing false report.
Sifat, 27, a former student of Mass Communication and Journalism Department of Rajshahi University, was found dead at her in-law’s house on March 29, 2015.
Her family members claimed that Sifat was beaten to death by her husband and in-laws after not getting Tk 20 lakh as dowry.
