BNP Rally Attack 500 prosecuted, 29 remanded

The police lodged two cases Saturday night with the Shahbagh and Ramna police stations against around 500 opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists, alleging that they attacked the police and obstructed their duties during the party’s demonstration in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka earlier on the day.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, joint secretary general and Dhaka south city president Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and central committee member Ishraque Hossain are among the leaders accused in the cases, officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna division said.

The police on Saturday attacked BNP leaders and activists towards the end of the rally that the party organised protesting at the government move to cancel BNP founder and late president Ziaur Rahman’s gallantry award Bir Uttam given for his role in the country’s liberation war.

Over 125 people, including eight police members, were injured in the police attack and the response from BNP activists to the attack.

The police had arrested 29 leaders and activists of the party on Saturday and produced them on Sunday before a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court that allowed the police to take them on a two-day remand, court and police officials said.

Of the cases, one was lodged with the Shahbagh police station naming 44 BNP leaders and activists and 250 to 300 unnamed people, said Shahbagh police station inspector (investigation) Arifur Rahman Sardar told New Age.

Sixteen of the accused were arrested, he said.

DMP Ramna zone additional deputy commissioner Harunur Rashid said that another case was lodged with the Ramna police station naming 37 BNP leaders and activists and 120 to 125 unnamed others and 13 of the accused were arrested.

Court officials said that the investigation officer of the case with the Shahbagh police, sub-inspector Golam Hossain Khan, produced 16 of the accused before Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury seeking a 10-day remand in police custody for interrogation.

The court allowed police to take them in custody for two days.

The BNP leaders and activists are Zakir Hossain, Parvez Reza, Khandakar Mujahidul Islam, Saugatul Islam, Minhazul Huq Nayan, Shawkatul Islam, Sajib, Shamim Reza, Shaon Jamaddar, Emon Sheikh, Nazrul Islam, Sazzad, Rahman Rana, Mostafa, Mahmudul Hasan and Palash Mia, they said.

Sub-inspector Shahidul Osman Masum, investigation officer of the case with the Ramna police, said that he had produced 13 accused before the same court seeking a seven-day remand but the court allowed him to take them on a two-day remand for interrogation.
