Legendary actor ATM Shamsuzzaman dies at 80
Veteran actor ATM Shamsuzzaman died at his residence in Sutrapur area in the capital’s old town early Saturday. He was 80.
The actor’s daughter Koyel Ahmed confirmed the news to New Age.
‘He died while sleeping at home. We found him dead while trying to waking him up in the morning. He was discharged from Asgar Ali Hospital on Friday as he wanted to return home,’ said Koyel Ahmed.
‘He had been suffering from breathing problems along with other health complications. He tested negative for COVID-19,’ Koyel added.
ATM Shamsuzzaman was born on September 10, 1941 at his maternal grandfather’s home in Daulatpur, Noakhali.
As an actor his first venture was a drama serial named Songsoptok directed by Abdullah al Mamun, which aired on Bangladesh Television.
There ATM Shamsuzzaman played the role of a petty villain named Ramzan. The serial was a super hit of that time and he became popular among the audience.
In 1972, he appeared as a war criminal in the film Ora Egaro Jon. He started playing both comical and negative characters.
He acted in Amzad Hossain’s film Noyonmoni and Golapi Ekhon Trene lending his weight to the characters that were central to the story despite being villains.
Later, Shamsuzzaman earned nationwide popularity for his portrayal as a villain in Dilip Biswas’ film Ashami.
He had played different roles in over 400 films, including Surja Dighal Bari, Dayee Ke, Shasti, Hajar Bochor Dhore, Molla Barir Bou, Chander Moto Bou, and Mon Boshena Porar Tebile, till date.
ATM Shamsuzzaman won six National Film Awards for Best Actor in Kazi Hayat’s Dayee Ke? (1987), Best Comedy Actor in Madam Fuli (1999), Churiwala (2001), Mon Boshe Na Porar Table A (2009), Best Supporting Actor in Chorabali (2012) and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017.
He was also conferred upon the Ekushey Padak in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to Bangladesh’s film industry.
