Traders continue demo for second consecutive day

Traders and shop owners continued their demonstrations for the second consecutive day on Monday in New Market area demanding that the government should allow them to continue their businesses during the freshly imposed ‘lockdown’ from April 5.

Hundreds of traders and shop owners staged a demonstration in the area blocking road, said New Market police station inspector (investigation) Yasin Ali.

The demonstrators also formed a human chain and brought out a protest procession at about 11:30am to press home their demand.

Traders and shop owners of different markets of the city participated in the demonstrations.

The demonstrators said that the government should allow the markets to remain open during the lockdown period as the Eid season had started.

Earlier, on Sunday afternoon, hundreds of traders and shop owners staged demonstrations and vandalised vehicles in the same area protesting against the government’s decision of keeping markets closed during lockdown.

They demanded that the government should allow them to keep markets open from 2:00pm to 10:00pm during the lockdown.

The government on Sunday imposed fresh restrictions on public movement and business operations, suspending operations of all modes of public transports across the country for a week from today to bring the COVID-19 outbreak under control.
