Daily cases surge past 7,000 in Bangladesh
The daily number of COVID-19 cases hit a fresh record, crossing the 7,000-mark for the first time, in the past 24 hours ending at 8:00am on Sunday.
Fifty-three more people died of the disease during the 24-hour period as the fresh wave of the coronavirus that began in early March has continued to turn severe.
The Directorate General of Health Services in its daily update on Sunday said that 7,087 more people were diagnosed with COVID-19 after testing 30,724 samples in the past 24 hours. The daily test positivity stood at 23.07 per cent.
With the new figures, the COVID-19 death toll in the country has reached 9,266 and the number of cases 6,37,364 since the first cases were announced on March 8, 2020.
The last record of the daily number of cases was on Friday with 6,830 people testing positive for the disease.
Amid the fresh COVID-19 wave, the government on Sunday announced restriction on public movement for a week from today.
A total of 2,707 people recovered from COVID-19 in the 24-hour period with the total number of recovered people reaching 5,52,482, the DGHS bulletin showed.
The overall recovery rate is 86.68 per cent while the fatality rate is 1.45 per cent.
Of the 53 people died during the 24-hour period, 34 were above 60 years, 16 between 41 years and 60 years, 2 between 31 years and 40 years and 1 was below 20 years.
The highest number of 37 deaths was recorded in Dhaka followed by 9 in Chattogram, 3 each in Rangpur and Mymensingh and 1 in Rajshahi.
Of the victims, 45 were males and 8 females.
COVID-19 has so far claimed the lives of 6,970 males and 2,296 females.
On Saturday, Bangladesh passed the 56th week of the COVID-19 outbreak, logging the highest weekly number of 38,471 cases.
The number of deaths in the week was 344, which is 71 per cent higher compared with that in the previous week.
