4,000 people sued over attacks on govt offices, cops in Faridpur

Police filed a case against over 4,000 unnamed people for Monday night’s attack on upazila administrative office, Saltha police station, office of the assistant commissioner for land and Muktijoddha complex and the police in Saltha upazila town in Faridpur.

‘Police filed the case Tuesday night naming 88 people and 3,000 to 4,000 unidentified people for attacking government offices and the police,’ said Ashikur Zaman, officer in-charge of Saltha police station, on Wednesday morning.

He said that they arrested eight people in connection with the attacks.

The OC declined to reveal the names of the arrested people and the named accused in the case.

On Monday night, an anti-COVID-19 restriction protester was killed and at least three others were critically injured as the police opened fire on mobs protesting against COVID-19 restrictions in Saltha upazila of Faridpu.

The mobs attacked the upazila administrative office, Saltha police station, office of the assistant commissioner for land and muktijoddha complex and clashed with the police, according to witnesses.

People turned into mobs after a rumour of a death in police firing spread, said Faridpur police additional superintendent Jamal Pasha on Tuesday.

Initially, a protest started at Fukra Bazar of Saltha where a rumour spread that a man was injured at a market while the administration was enforcing the Bangladesh government’s 11-point anti-coronavirus instructions, restricting public movement and business operations to contain the sudden surge in coronavirus infections, he said.

Thousands of people took to the streets in anger and started clashing with the police, leaving at least 20 people injured, including eight cops, he added.
