5 held over torturing Bangladeshi girl in India

Four men and a woman were arrested on Thursday over a video clip of a woman being tortured and raped that went viral in social media.

The girl is from Bangladesh and might have been trafficked into India. Her father filed a case with Hatirjheel police station, said DMP Tejgaon division deputy commissioner Md Shahidullah.

India media reported that arrested youths are also from Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, the arrestees had recorded themselves torturing the victim and shared the clip with friends in Assam and West Bengal, reported Indian newspaper The Hindu.

They have been identified as Sagar, Mohammed Baba Sheikh, Hridoy Babu and Hakeel. The identity of the woman is yet to be revealed.

The video of the girl being tortured went viral on social media showing the five people abusing the girl.

The police official said the incident took place in Kerala of India around 15-16 days back and the victim is a Bangladeshi. Indian police in Assam had released pictures of the culprits and sought information about them.

Tejgaon Police identified one of the young men who tortured the victim. His name is Rifatul Islam Hridoy alias Hridoy Babu, 26, who is locally known as ‘TikTok Hridoy’.

When it went viral, the North East police as well as their counterparts in Bangladesh initiated an investigation.

The Assam police even put up images of the accused on Twitter seeking information.

They traced the origin of the video in a mobile in Bengaluru.

The Bengaluru city police were alerted and special teams, within hours, tracked down the gang on Thursday evening.

They were arrested in a rented house at Avalahalli, Ramamurthy Nagar.

The arrested are reportedly labourers.

Police said that the girl is from a poor family and got married five years ago. Her husband works in Kuwait and her minor child is in in-laws’ house. She fell in love with Hridoy and left home one year ago saying that she was going to Saudi Arabia.

She fell into the trap of the trafficking ring and went missing since then, said DC Shahidullah.

Interpol National Central Bureau of Bangladesh police headquarters has sent queries to its India counterpart to know details about the arrested, but yet to get any response.

Assistant inspector general for the NCB at police headquarters Mohiul Islam said that they would try to rescue the girl and bring her back to Bangladesh.

If the arrested are confirmed as Bangladeshis, police will bring and try them to the country, said the police officer.
