Farmer beaten to death in Kushtia
A 35-year-old farmer was beaten to death allegedly by a local village chairman and his men over suspicion of fish theft in Kushtia’s Khoksa union in the early hours of Tuesday.
The deceased is Jashim Sheikh, son of Raushan Ali Sheikh of village Ratanpur under Khoksa union of the upazila.
Asiya Khatun, the wife of the deceased, alleged that the village chairman’s men called her husband over the mobile phone at about 4:00am and asked him to meet the chairman without any delay.
After reaching the chairman’s house, the latter accused Jashim of stealing fish from his pond. When Jasim denied the allegations, the chairman and his men thrashed him badly.
Later, locals rushed Jasim to Khoksa Upazila Health Centre in a critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Medical officer of the emergency department of the centre, Ashraful Alam, said that Jashim died of severe head injuries.
Syed Ashikur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Khoksa police station, said the body was sent to the morgue of Kushtia General Hospital for an autopsy.
No complaint has been received in this regard yet. Legal action will be taken after a probe, the OC added.
