Tanners set rawhide price 28pc lower than last year

The leather sector leaders on Wednesday announced the prices of rawhide of sacrificial animals setting 26-28 per cent lower than the prices of last year citing fall in prices and slow demand in the international market.
In the year 2014, the tanners had also set the prices of rawhide lower than the prices of 2013 on the same excuse.
At a press conference in the city, leather sector leaders announces the prices of salted cowhide at Tk 50-55 a square feet for Dhaka and Tk 40-45 a square feet for outside of Dhaka which is Tk 20 lower than the rate of last year.
According to the announcement of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather Goods and Footwear Exporters Association, Bangladesh Tanners Association and Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association, the buying price of castrated goat skin has been set at Tk 20-22 a square feet and that of goat skin at Tk 15-17 a square feet.
Last year, the tanners had set the price of per square feet of cowhide at Tk 70-75 in Dhaka and Tk 60-65 across the country outside Dhaka, goatskin at Tk 30-35 and buffalo skin at Tk 35-40 while the tanners bought per square feet of cowhide for Tk 85-95 in Dhaka and Tk 75-80 outside Dhaka, goatskin for Tk 50-55 and buffalo skin for Tk 40-45 in the year 2013.
At the press conference, BFLLFEA chairman M Abu Taher said that the leather sector in Bangladesh was passing through a tough time
and to meet the international standard entrepreneurs would have to invest huge to relocate tanneries to Savar immediately.
At the same time, more than 35 per cent of hide that were collected during last year Eid-ul-Azha remained unsold as both the demand and prices of the leather and leather products fell in the international market, he said.
Md Shaheen Ahmed, chairman of the BTA said that ‘this year the traders were not willing to set the prices of rawhide due to slow demand on the global market but on request of the commerce ministry they have set the prices.
He said that in line with the international market, Bangladesh should reduce the price of hide, otherwise the sector would lose its competitiveness as well as buyers.
Shaheen demanded special incentives for the exporters of leather sector to increase the competitive edge of the sector.
He also demanded Tk 6,000 crore as soft loan to help relocate tannaries from Hajaribagh to Savar.
Shaheen expressed his doubt over the quality of under-constructed Effluent Treatment Plant and demanded to complete the plant within the scheduled time.
