ICT prosecutor Zead Al Malum dies

International Crimes Tribunal senior prosecutor and freedom fighter Zead Al Malum dies at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka Saturday late evening.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter and a son to mourn his death.

He was removed from life support just before midnight, said the tribunal’s prosecutor Rezia Sultana Chamon.

The 67-year-old Supreme Court lawyer was admitted to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in the capital on May 25 following a cardiac arrest.

His serious lung infection was detected there and was taken to Coronary Care Unit at the hospital.

As his condition deteriorated further, he was put on life support on May 27.

He was shifted to the CMH on June 2, she said.

Senior prosecutor Sultan Mahmud Simon said that the freedom fighter will be buried at Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard on Sunday afternoon.

His body will be taken to International Crimes Tribunal premises at noon, to the office of the Communist Party of Bangladesh at 12:30pm at Supreme Court Bar Association premises at 1:30pm and to Central Shaheed Minar at 2:30pm to pay last respect to the freedom fighter.

Born on December 31, 1954 in village Karotia under Sadar upazila in Tangail, Zead Al Malum was involved in the politics of the then East Pakistan Chhatra Union and joined the liberation war in 1971as a student.

He became vice-president of the students’ organization after the Liberation War and became active in politics of Communist Party of Bangladesh and became its central leader.

He became the president of Bangladesh Khetmojur Samity, the farm labour organization of CPB.

He was also involved in cultural movement and was associated with Bangladesh Udichi Shilpi Goshthi and Khelaghar Ashar.

Zead Al Malum began his career as a lawyer in 1983.

The Supreme Court lawyer was appointed prosecutor of the ICT at the rank of an additional attorney general on March 25, 2010, the day of the initiation of the ICT to try suspected war crimes offenders.

He conducted a number of war crimes cases including those against war criminals – Jamaat-e-Islami former chief Ghulam Azam, chief Matiur Rahman Nizami, secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed and Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury.
