Thakurgaon journalist arrested under Digital Security Act

Police arrested an ailing journalist in Thakurgan under Digital Security Act on Saturday night.

Arrested journalist, Tanvir Hasan Tanu, is the district correspondent of the Daily Ittefaq and Independent TV. He tested negative for Covid-19 on Saturday morning.

Later, he was admitted to Thakurgaon Gneral Hospital early Sunday as his health condition deteriorated.

According to police, Tanu was arrested over a report of irregularities in serving food at Thakurgaon Adhunik Sadar Hospital. 

Nadirul Aziz, superintendent of the hospital filed a case with the Thakurgaon Sadar police station against three journalists, including Tanu, under the Digital Security Act.

The other two journalists are Abdul Latif Litu, district correspondent of Bangladesh Pratidin, and Rahim Shuvo, district correspondent of News Bangla 24.

Tanu was arrested when he went to the police station to know about the case filed against him, said Lutfor Rahman Mithu, secretary of Thakurgaon Press club.

Hearing the news of arrest, agitated journalists staged a demonstration on the press club premises and they demanded his immediate release.

Thakurgaon Sadar police office-in-charge Tanveerul Islam said that they arrested Tanu at the police station.

Nur Aftabul Alam Rupom, focal person of Odhikar Thakurgaon, demanded immediate withdrawal of the case against the journalists.

Monsur Ali, president of Thakurgaon press club demanded immediate release of Tanu and condemned the action.
