Govt stops receiving foreign-bound students’ application for vaccine

The government has stopped receiving any new application for getting Covid-19 vaccine from Bangladeshi students intending to travel abroad for study as the last date of application expired on July 31.

The foreign ministry, which was responsible for a part of processing the applications, stopped receiving the new applications after a 19-day campaign starting from July 13, according to the government officials.

The campaign was extended for four days as the initial closure was set for July 27.

A total of 23,665 people applied for receiving vaccine till July 31 to facilitate their travel to study abroad.

Some 8,989 of the registered students were intending to travel to China, 2,955 to Canada, 2,110 to the United Kingdom, 1,896 to India, 1,460 to Germany, 1,310 to Malaysia, 998 to Japan and 705 to the United States.

The foreign ministry cleared and forwarded some 21,172 applicants to the ICT division of the government for next actions, as at least 1280 applicants filled up the google form meant for the purpose twice.

A total of 14,777 students also completed their registration with the surokkha app, and some 8,027 registrants of them received the first dose of Covid vaccine till July 31 afternoon.

The foreign ministry was working out to regularise several hundred incomplete applications, which was approximately three per cent of the total entries, depending on receiving replies by emails sent to the applicants from the ministry.
