EU keen on Bangladesh electoral process: envoy
The European Union has been following the electoral process in Bangladesh including the steps undertaken for the formation of the new election commission, EU ambassador Charles Whiteley said in Dhaka on Thursday.
‘We are following the electoral process,’ he said in a statement made at Meet the Press organised by the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
The EU was also aware about the bill placed in the Bangladesh Parliament on formation of a new election commission, he said with expressing hope that things relevant to the elections would be done in a transparent manner.
The ambassador also indicated that the EU might send election observation missions to Bangladesh for the general election 2023.
Functional democracy, good governance and human rights ‘are the key areas’ for the EU to engage in, he added.
He also spoke on the transition for Bangladesh towards graduation to a developing country from an LDC and Rohingya issues.
DRU president Nazrul Islam Mithu and general secretary Nurul Islam Hasib also spoke at the function.
