Moudud should get due recognition: discussion
Veteran politician cum lawyer Moudud Ahmed was a defender of democracy and worked for the welfare of the nation throughout his life, but did not get proper recognition for his works, observed politicians, lawyers and professionals in a commemoration meeting in Dhaka on Saturday.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed Memorial Council organised the meeting at the VIP lounge of the National Press Club in Dhaka to commemorate the life and works of Moudud Ahmed.
The commemoration meeting was organised to mark the first anniversary of death of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee member Moudud Ahmed who died in a Singapore hospital on March 16, 2021 at the age 80.
Gonoshasthya Kendra founder and freedom fighter Zafrullah Chowdhury, who presided over the meeting, said that Moudud had played significant roles in the politics and law profession.
‘But we have failed to give appropriate honour to him. Moudud, however, will be remembered for long for his works and writings,’ Zafrullah said.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal JSD president ASM Abdur Rob said that that Moudud was a veteran parliamentarian and played prominent role in the politics of the country.
Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam said that Moudud was a successful lawyer and also a prominent writer and he would be remembered for his writings.
Retired judge of the Appellate Division MA Matin said Moudud Ahmed had led the law battle for scraping the Special Powers Act 1974.
Economist Debapriya Bhattacharya said that Moudud Ahmed was a liberal democrat who played a prominent role in the politics and in law profession.
Nagarik Oikya convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said that Moudud was an exceptional politician who always tried to establish the truth.
Hasna Moudud, widow of Moudud, said that she would publish the unpublished writings of Moudud including his auto biography.
She alleged that Moudud did not get proper appreciation of his works during his lifetime.
Eminent singer Mostafa Zaman Abbasi and lawyer Mambub Uddin Khokan also took part in the discussion.
