10 Red Crescent volunteers sued over beating JU students

Ten volunteers of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society were sued by the Jahangirnagar University administration on Monday over the alleged beating of two JU students at Savar Upazila Health Complex vaccination centre on Sunday.

JU chief security officer Sudipta Shaheen was the complainant on behalf of the university administration, while a sub-inspector of Savar model police station filed the case against three named and six unidentified accused.

The named accused are Argha Arpan Biswas, 21, Akib Hossain Nur, 19, Sabbir Rahman, 22, members of Savar regional branch of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society.

Earlier on Sunday noon, JU masters’ students Emon Islam, of the philosophy department, and Majedur Rahman, of the urban and regional planning department, were locked into argument with the Red Cresecent volunteers over the requested vaccination after scheduled time at Savar Upazila Health Complex, on the outskirt of Dhaka city.

At one stage, Majed allegedly slapped a Red Crescent member over the latter’s alleged misbehaviour, triggering a fight when some 12 Red Crescent volunteers started beating the students, according to witnesses.

The students went to Savar model police station to file a case. The on-duty officer, however, allegedly refused to record the case, terming the incident as the students ‘making obstacles to follow government instruction’.

Majed and Emon were under treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar on Monday.

Later, hundreds of fellows of the beaten JU students blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway at about 8:00pm on Sunday, demanding immediate arrest of those involved and installation of a vaccination centre on the campus to minimise hassle of students.

The highway blockade, which lasted for about an hour, created long tailbacks on both sides.

The students withdrew their position following the assurance from Savar model police station officer-in-charge Khan Shahriar that their demands would be met.

He said that they would look into the matter.

Savar upazila health and family planning officer Sayemul Huda said, ‘The full team has already been withdrawn from the vaccination centre and we are keeping contact with the victim students over their physical condition.’

‘We are planning to install a vaccination centre at JU campus soon following the request of the university administration’, he added.

The health complex authority also expressed regret over the ‘unexpected’ incident through a notice on Monday afternoon.
