BCL men beat up journalist at RU dormitory
Leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, student wing of the ruling Awami League, allegedly beat up a journalist at Madar Bux Hall of Rajshahi University on Sunday night.
The injured journalist, Shahabuddin Ahemd, is a masters’ student of the Bangla department of the university. He works for online news portal www.bdmorning.com.
Witnesses said, RU BCL Madar Bux Hall unit vice-president Giasuddin Kajol and two of his fellow activists beat up Shahabuddin Ahemd as the latter asked Giasuddin not to smoke in the television room.
Shahabuddin Ahmed told New Age that he along with other residential students was watching the final match of the Indian Premier League at the dormitory’s television room on Sunday night.
‘While watching the cricket match, Giasuddin Kajol, a fourth-year student of history department, started smoking,’ he said.
Shahabuddin said that Kajol went heavy on him and beat him up as he asked him not to smoke in the TV room.
Later, Shahabuddin’s friends and hall mates rescued him and took him to the university medical center where he was given first aid.
The accused BCL leader could not be reached for his comment despite repeated attempts.
Journalists working on the campus staged a sit-in programme in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence demanding immediate action against the BCL men and removal of the Madar Bux Hall provost.
Md Nuruzzaman, president of Rajshahi University Journalist Association, alleged that he along with his fellow journalists contacted the hall provost several times over phone, but he did not respond to their call.
‘Instead of coming to the dormitory and taking necessary steps to solve the problem, the provost made the journalists wait in front of the dormitory gate for three consecutive hours, and later refused to come to the spot’, he added.
Later, the journalists withdrew their sit-in programme at about 2:00am after the pro-vice-chancellor Professor Sultan-Ul-Islam assured them of meeting their demands by Monday.
